[ The screen snaps on, revealing one magnified blue eye. It snaps off for a minute, then turns on once again to reveal a dirt-stained face at a far enough distance to catch his whole visage. He looks annoyed, to say the least. Brow furrowed, lip curled in mild frustration.

Then the screen shuts off again.

But the blank screen is suddenly accompanied by a harsh SCREECH, followed by the loud two-beat thump of someone hitting the side of the device. There's another loud screech, as the device is pushed away in frustration, accidentally turning on once more to reveal a clear picture of Ben Hawkins, looking down at the device. ]

You all talk like this to each other? All up in everybody's business?

I wouldn't say you're necessarily all up in everyone's business, but this is mostly how people communicate with each other around here.

[Claire doesn't mention cell phones because... well.]

There are ways to lock things on the Network - that's, uh, the whole thing this system works on, or at least what we've all just kind of taken to calling it. If you want to keep things more private.

Y'all forget how to talk to each other?

[ System, network... it all shoots over his head, but he wouldn't admit to it. ]

How do you do it? Make it private.

We still see each other and talk in person. This is just quicker. It's like... sending a letter to someone in less than a second.

[Claire spends a moment scratching her head.]

There are some codes that you need and it'll just automatically make things private whenever you want it to, if you specify. I can send them to you across this.

[Magical handwavey codes - ZACH'S CODES - along with magical handwavey, easy-to-understand instructions are making their way to YOU, Ben.]

[ Believe it or not, that was his attempt at a joke. ] We got telegrams. Telephones. Still ain't the same.

You sure no one? [ Tentatively, he's accepting this- and he may or may not struggle with the code a bit until he gets it right. Typing? He's already decided it's not his thing. ]

You'll find phones here, but I'm not so sure about telegrams.

And yeah, I'm sure. These were made by a really good friend of mine, before he left, a long time ago. I'd trust him to make something like this without mistakes.

Army used codes during the war, at least that's what I hear. But I ain't worryin' about normal people. Don't need eyes to read.

What about them deities?

The deities can read whatever they want. It's their Network, it's their City. They're the only ones you can't hide from, but outside of the curses, they tend to mostly leave us alone.

I mean, if— if they can shanghai us here, then the deities- whatever they really are- they don't need to pick locks to see what we're hidin'.

These curses don't sound like leavin' us alone.

Like I said, outside of the curses. And when you do something they don't really appreciate, like try to blow up their office.

Curses are enough. Trappin' us here's enough.

You really let them mess with you.
