You don't want to risk that kind of a whoopin'. Time stops while you're here. If you read the guide, you'd know about that. So if there's something you have to do back home, don't worry about that, at least. It'll be there waiting for you when you get back.

I don't think the way you talk is strange. I grew up in Texas. There's plenty of accents there, and my mom threatened us with a whoopin' once or twice.
